What's writing?

It's important as AI enters our lives we update our understanding of what writing actually is.

Having wrote everyday for nearly three decades just for the sake of the love of it, I have some thoughts that may help.

Writing is the only never-fail way to make a dream real.

When we write we take a dream and sculpt it to life with a tangible shareable substance.

This is why printed text is still so important.

Speech is so ephemeral. Air changes with a breath and a whim.

The advancement of AI is making the written word feel more and more like a game of Telephone.

One person whispers a sentence to another who whispers it to another and so on.... At the end of the line of whispers the original sentence is rarely the same group of words it started out as.

Consistent clarity of a dream shared is reason enough to keep the printed word around.

A printed book is tamper-proof.

The Internet uses binary light the way we use speech to communicate. It's prone to the whims and assessments of the viewer. And so, it's easily changeable.

If Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Michelangelo would've painted The Mona Lisa, The Starry Night, The Sistine Chapel on video monitors online only, their gifts to humanity would be lost forever.

The whole Artificially Intelligent Internet is a game of Telephone.

Verification software is still at least a step added super-imposed on the original. The viewer has to trust the maker of the 'truth' checking software's assessment first.

It's like only being able to view The Mona Lisa or read The Lord of the Rings through a company's provided goggles if you want to see the 'true' image and story.

Big Brother isn't watching; algorithms are accessing for company profits.

AI isn't anti-evolutionary technology. The way it's being used right now is.

A few companies harvesting all the data they can to control the human narrative has Orwell rolling in his Newspeak grave.

Ideally, individual companies, organizations, families, and people will eventually host their own LLMs.

It's the only foreseeable way to live with AI in a humane way.

Not to mention: It's really cool.

Imagine your whole family's history up to the current day available in a Personal Language Model. You could literally rewrite your family's destiny with a a few acts of Original Intelligence.

Do the same for your small business or corporate machine.

Do the same for yourself. Wonder Fell is my own Large Language Model of Wordly Art.

PLMs are the wave of the future. O/ Copyrighted today, of course.

For those of us who keep a regular journal practice, imagine if when you wrote 'Dear Diary' you got a response. Instead of Grok, or Claude, or GPT; all your personal archived memories answered back.

Setting up personal and privatized PLMs is the only way to sustainably live with AI.

Having only a few corporations control the sharing of information is a bit too much like The Empire having control in Star Wars.

I'm surprised my fellow tech-nerds never saw the easy analogy.

Blame the enthusiasm of new tech. Get over it. Join this poet's Rebellion and let's get PLMs to the people.
